Mid Century Jewish Mawrtyrs

Why Did They Put the Jews in the Basement of Rhoads?

You know, it just didn't dawn on me then. In retrospect, most of my friends in the dorm were Jewish.

Why do you think you ended up with a majority Jewish friend group at Bryn Mawr?

Well, it was mostly who was on my dormitory floor. Now, whether they put us all together is another question that never occurred to me, but that very well could be. I mean, there were a few [Jews] elsewhere in the dormitory, but there seemed to be a lot on my floor [LAUGHS]. Hmmm, I have to ask Elaine about that. I never really thought about that. It was just the people I would meet in the bathroom, most of them were Jewish. Hope [Haskell] was not, Sandy Green was not. Who else was down on our floor? Oh, Anne of course. But everyone else was. Joan Wolfe, who was a year ahead of me was, and then the rest of them were my class. So, it could be [that they put the Jews together]. Cause I think Elaine and I, and maybe Anne were the only scholarship students down there. [PAUSE] Hmm, why did they put the Jews in the basement? Good question. They did put in a couple of very non-Jewish, private school people down there too as part of the suite.
