I met a guy [Sheldon Penn] in my sophomore year. I remember when I was going out with him, his parents were both immigrants, his mother was so upset because she said I was a shiksa [since my  mother was not Jewish]. One time, both he and his father were trying to get his mother upset, and they said, “You know, Betsy is a descendant of R. E. Lee.” I mean Robert E. Lee is a first cousin four generations removed. “So?” she said, “So?” They thought that would upset her. They said, “Well, doesn't that bother you?” She said, “Well, your father was a rabbi, my father was a rabbi, so who's this Rabbi Lee four generations back?”
