Rabbi Gave Permission to Eat Non-Kosher Food at Bryn Mawr

As a matter of fact, my mother had a talk with our rabbi [Max D Kline], who was a very prominent rabbi, before I went. She said, "You know, we've always kept a kosher home but she's going to be living at college and I don't know what to tell her," and Rabbi Klein said to her, "You know, Elizabeth, there is nothing more important than education and learning." He said, how did he put it? "She needs her sustenance." He gave me permission to eat [non-kosher food], you know, nothing forbidden [but permission to eat the non-kosher food in the dining hall] and that was amazing.
