I remember being on the lawn at graduation with [my good friend] Ellen Stone. She said something to me like, "Did you ever realize that your name makes you sound Jewish?" – my maiden name was Gross. It suddenly came to me, that she thought I was not Jewish, and didn't know, ever know. She got me a little wrong maybe. It suggests that people didn't know I was Jewish, and maybe they would've acted differently [if they had known].
