The Arctic Regions, Illustrated with Photographs Taken on an Art Expedition to Greenland
London: S. Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1873

American artist William Bradford, whose highly regarded, dramatic paintings of the Arctic helped shape popular conceptions of the region, spent five seasons in the 1860s sketching along the coast of Labrador. In 1869 he sailed as far north as Baffin Bay on a specially commissioned steamer, the Panther, to sketch, but more importantly, to photograph land, sea, and inhabitants of the area. John Dunmore and George Critcherson were the expedition photographers. Bradford’s published account of the journey, illustrated with albumen prints, was an early and influential example of the photographically illustrated travel book.
