W. A. Bentley (1865–1931, American)
Photomicrographs of Snow Crystals, 1931
Gift of Helen F. Corson

Wilson Alwyn Bentley was a pioneering photographer of snowflakes and other weather phenomena, and an innovative researcher into many branches of meteorology. Over the course of his lifetime, he successfully photographed more than 5000 individual snowflakes and published in numerous popular science journals. His magnum opus, Snow Crystals, was published in 1931, shortly before his death. It includes more than 2000 photomicrographs, mostly snow crystals but also hail, frost, and dew. This album contains 200 of the photos reproduced in that book.
