The Legal Quays as Proposed to be Amended
from The Second Report from the Select Committee upon the Improvement of the Port of London
London, 1799
Plate 24. James Basire, engraver

With London as a major port, by the eighteenth century the Thames was crowded with an increasing number of ships and boats. There were insufficient wharves to unload; continual deposition of silt decreased the depth of the river; and the largest of the ships could only pass under London Bridge at low tide. The House of Commons appointed a committee to gather evidence and testimony and to suggest how the problems might be relieved. This map, from the second of three official reports of the committee, presents two possible, although partial, solutions.
