Troubleshooting

The interactive lab scenes are built with Unity and exported to WebGL. Since WebGL is interpreted differently by different browsers, we hope that some of these tips will help you to resolve problems with the site. We recommend that you navigate this site using Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. We also recommend that you use the interactive content by viewing it in full-screen mode. To access full-screen mode, click the expand button located underneath each embedded interactive scene.

Remember, to "walk" around the lab scenes, use your up, down, left, right arrow keys. To rotate the camera, use your W, A, S, D keys. To interact with an object, click on it. A green exclamation point will appear when an object or space is clickable.

Q & A

I just see a black screen when I try to load the interactive content...

It is worth trying to clear your cache and refresh your browser, but chances are, especially if you are viewing this page in a browser that is not Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, that your browser does not support WebGL or some other aspect of the project. This site is not designed to be viewed on mobile devices and has known rendering problems with Safari. Please use one of the recommended browsers if you encounter this problem.

When I load interactive content, I see a Unity loading screen, but the loading bar isn’t advancing…

Sometimes things get stuck, especially if your connection to the internet isn't stable during loading. Try reloading the page with a force-refresh. On PCs, the key command is Ctrl-F5. On Macs this is Command-ShiftUp-R.

I saw the Unity loading screen, the loading bar finished, but this was followed by a black screen…

Each room may take some time to render following the loading status screen. You may experience a longer wait if you have a slow processor, outdated graphics card, or a slow internet connection. This can also be a browser-specific problem. If you are viewing the project in Google Chrome, try going to Settings > Enable Hardware Acceleration > On. If you have been waiting for more than five minutes and still see a black screen, clear your cache and refresh the page.

I am using Google Chrome. Caption panels load, but otherwise I see a black screen.

This is a Chrome-specific problem that requires you to make changes to your browser settings. Try going to Settings > Enable Hardware Acceleration > On. If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend viewing the project in Mozilla Firefox instead.

I am using Microsoft Edge and the room/random objects are reflective.

Microsoft Edge interprets specular highlights and reflective properties of materials very differently than Firefox and Chrome. While we hope that we have corrected all of the problematic materials, we recommend using Firefox or Chrome for the best experience.

I am using Microsoft Edge or some other non-Chrome, non-Firefox browser, and the cursor disappears randomly!

Certain browsers interpret swapping the cursor skin differently than others. If this occurs, you can still continue using the project. Instead of displaying the green exclamation point, the browser maps no texture to your cursor. Your cursor is still there and the objects are still clickable when this happens. You can continue to use the project, but we recommend using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox instead.

Why are the objects/captions slightly blurry?

The embedded scenes are resized to fit your browser and this site. This resizing affects how the room is rendered. The best resolution is achieved by viewing the WebGL rooms in fullscreen mode. You can enable this by clicking on the expand button below the room. Hit escape to exit fullscreen mode at any time. Rendering of the project may also depend upon your graphics card, internet speed, and browser settings for WebGL.
